Death of the Pastor's Wife is a three-part Netflix documentary series about Mica Miller, a 30-year-old worship leader at Solid Rock Church in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, who died in April 2024. It premiered on 26 August 2026, is streaming in India too, and it has been argued over on Reddit, in Christian media and across social feeds ever since.

What is the series about?

Directors Julia Willoughby Nason and Mike Gasparro tell the story mostly through the people who loved Mica: her siblings, close friends, former church members, a biblical counsellor and her divorce attorney. "What stayed with us about Mica's story was how hard she seemed to be fighting to be heard," the directors said.

Mica met John-Paul Miller, the church's pastor, when she was a teenager in his congregation. He is 15 years older. They married, she worked for the church, and by 2024 she was trying to leave the marriage. Her death was officially ruled a suicide.

The friends who loved her remember a woman of faith first. "She believed in Sisterhood," one wrote. "She was creative and she was a force to be reckoned with." They spent evenings crafting together at her home, and Mica was, in her friend's words, "so darn proud" of the shirt in the photo below.

What is John-Paul Miller accused of?

Friends and family in the series describe controlling behaviour, and Mica had reported being followed and harassed before she died. In December 2025 a federal grand jury indicted Miller on charges of cyberstalking and making false statements to investigators, according to TIME. Prosecutors allege he hired investigators to follow her and bought tyre-deflation devices.

Miller pleaded not guilty in January 2026. He has described their relationship as a "great marriage" and told TIME that "when she was with me for seven years, she was happy, healthy, whole." The charges are allegations. His trial, first set for July, was postponed to the court's September term. Solid Rock Church closed in late 2024 after protests outside the building.

Why are Christians paying attention?

Because the series is less about one man than about a system that let one man hold every key. In Mica's life, the same person was her husband, her boss and her pastor. When one person holds all three roles, the usual places a person would go for help are all run by him.

People close to Mica saw pieces of it without knowing what they were seeing. A friend who shared family evenings with her wrote this April that when her husband kept tabs on Mica, they laughed it off. She took it for "a husband who loves his wife and just cared. Little did anyone know."

Writer Sean Palmer names the habits that make this possible in a piece for Good Faith Media. There's the "man of God" idea that a pastor can't be questioned, and the board that never says no. There's also the congregation that sings on Sunday and then, as he puts it, just goes to lunch. "A board that refuses to tell their pastor 'no' is not supporting him," Palmer writes. "They are abandoning him."

Scripture is not neutral on this. Peter told church leaders to shepherd the flock, and Jesus defined greatness as service:

"Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock."

1 Peter 5:3 (KJV)

"Whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister."

Matthew 20:26 (KJV)

A pastor with nobody able to say no to him isn't what the Bible means by a leader.

What can a church actually do?

Watching the series is a good start, but the questions it raises are local ones. Can anyone in your church correct the senior pastor? Does the pastor's family have somewhere to go that he doesn't control? Would a young woman who felt afraid know who to tell?

Mica's family is now pushing for "Mica's Law," which would widen domestic-violence laws to cover coercive control. Churches don't need to wait for a law to take fear seriously.
